ABOUT HAYLEY
Growing up on the Maine coast, I’ve spent my life in awe of the natural world. From pebbled shores to spruce-forested mountains, I draw endless inspiration from the place I call home.
I temporarily left Maine for Baltimore to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art. I earned my BA in Graphic Design and that has kept me busy 9-5 all these years. Those early days, though—freshman year in the painting studio—stuck with me, and I’ve been toting my French easel around the state of Maine every chance I get ever since.
During early summer trips to Monhegan Island, I bring my painting supplies and hike out to my favorite views. Spending time in these varying landscapes and capturing fleeting moments challenges me to keep the work loose, and embrace the sand that sometimes comes en plein air. Painting has been a lifelong endeavor, and I look forward to sharing the results of my painting practice with you. It is my hope that the views, so familiar to me, conjure joy and reflect the beauty of the natural world in your home.
a few elements around ME that influence my work...
Where the land meets the sea
The combination of the rugged coast and the ebb and flow of the tides will forever have my attention.
salty cedar shingles
Time and the elements season these iconic Maine structures.
My father's lobstering career
My father shared his love of the natural world with me from a very young age. From the stern of his boat I have had a unique view of the Gulf of Maine and the incredible creatures that call it home. The day Dad caught this blue lobster (1 in 2 million) was an extra special memory.
Maine's island communities
Monhegan has had my heart for nearly two decades. Familiar views are ever changing offering new perspectives with the passage of time and, sometimes, brutal seasonal weather patterns.
All the Boats!
Throngs of boats up and down the coast compose a dancing cast of characters. Whether moored and bravely facing the oncoming tide, or racing through the open ocean - they offer visual and architectural texture.
The natural world of flora and fauna
From a hidden mountain trail to the gardens in my backyard, every detail of the growth and death cycle catches my eye and reminds me of the natural rhythms of life, all of them beautiful.
